Snowstorm Incoming; Bitter Cold After

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Today and Saturday will be an eventful period in the weather. Between snow and cold weather, there will be a lot to digest over the next 48 hours. First, the snow starts up just before lunchtime, eventually getting heavier early in the afternoon. After the cold front passes, temperatures will drop and winds will pick up, bringing dangerous wind chills into the equation early Saturday morning.

As a result, many advisories and warnings have been issued in the region. Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings are first, lasting from this morning until Saturday morning. Cold Weather Advisories and Extreme Cold Warnings start to take effect early Saturday morning, ending Saturday afternoon. Meteorologist Christian Boteler dives into the winter weather and what to expect after:

Snowfall will start late this morning and will not stop for a majority of the region until Saturday morning. The Greenbrier Valley may see a break, but the rest of the region will have steady snowfall. Roads will become slushy and snow covered later in the afternoon, causing travel issues for the evening commute. After the snow is done, the spine of the Appalachians sits between 5 and 8 inches, while a majority of the area ends up between 3 and 5 inches. This snow will be wet and heavy, so shoveling will be more strenuous than previous events. Here’s the snowfall forecast:

The arctic front will pass through tonight, bringing cold temperatures and gusty winds with it. By tomorrow morning, wind chills will be in the negative teens and twenties. These values are dangerous and will cause issues. If you need to go outside, please ensure you have proper cold gear including a face cover. Temperatures start to improve a bit in the afternoon, but the cold remains through the weekend. Snow also leaves the region Saturday afternoon, leaving skies partly sunny for Sunday. Cold Weather Advisories and Extreme Cold Warnings will be in effect form early Saturday morning through Sunday morning.

After the weekend, conditions start to improve. By Tuesday, temperatures will be near or at 50 degrees for the region. This along with rain coming in late Tuesday night through Wednesday will help with snow melt. However, flood potential is there depending on how much rain falls and ice melts. We are keeping an eye on this potential during the middle of next week. The front that brings the rain will drop temperatures back to average by Thursday. Here’s your 7-Day Forecast:
