Showers tonight, more rain and snow later

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It was a nice afternoon around southern West Virginia, with highs in the middle 50s in most areas, well above the average in a nice change of pace from much of the previous three weeks.

Now, we’re seeing a cold front swinging through the area, producing some showers. Some of these will be heavy at times, and while the chance for lightning is very small, it is not zero. The real travel concern, however, will be the chance for some of the precipitation to change over to snow or at least a rain/snow mix. There is also a small chance for some freezing drizzle, and the NWS in Charleston has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for that possibility for northwestern Pocahontas County.

Tomorrow, the front exits and the temperatures cool back down, with highs generally in the middle to upper 30s. There will be some early rain and snow, predominantly in the higher elevations. Any accumulation tonight and tomorrow will be light, generally less than 1″, with a small chance for higher totals on the highest peaks.
For the next couple of days, temperatures stay cool before rising by the weekend to near 50 degrees. The question regarding the weekend, however, is regarding the chance of rain and snow. Another system will definitely come towards the region from the west and southwest.
How far north it gets (meaning how much moisture comes into the area with it) is a matter of debate, as it usually is this far out. How much rain falls, how quickly it falls, and how much of it is rain rather than snow will all determine the totals. That will, in turn, determine if there will be any flooding. Right now, it looks like we’ll avoid any major flooding, but we’ll be tracking this storm through the rest of the week.
