OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It was another wonderful day around southern West Virginia, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s for most areas, with only the high elevation areas cooler. There were showers this morning, but these were quite scattered and were mainly in the northern portions of the area. With a gusty southwesterly wind, temperatures tonight will be downright warm for late March. Lows (if you can call them that) will wind up in the upper 50s and lower 60s.
As the night goes on, a front will push into the state. The front is quite strong; temperatures behind it are as much as 40 degrees colder than they are ahead of it!
The front is also triggering some showers and storms, and some of these are on the severe side this evening in parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Those areas have Tornado and Severe Thunderstorm Watches in effect.
The same front is headed for our area, and we’ll begin to see showers as well tomorrow morning. As it has been the last several times that fronts have rolled through, the best conditions for severe weather are to our north, so the line weakens considerably before it gets here. There could be an isolated rumble of thunder around the area, especially in the northern counties, but for the most part, what we get is garden-variety showers.
While the storms with the front will lose most of their intensity, the temperature gradient mentioned above will still be intact, so temperatures will fall as the day goes on. We’ll start off in the middle 60s before falling into the 40s and 50s in the afternoon.
By the time the day is done, we’ll be back below freezing. Any precipitation that is still falling at that point will change over to a mix of rain and snow or will simply be snow. The sun breaks out Saturday, but it will be cold, with highs in the mid-to upper 40s. After a cold Saturday night, the weekend ends quite a bit warmer.
Next week will be an active and warm one around the area. There will be a chance for showers from Monday onward, and highs climb back into the lower to middle 70s again.
