Charleston, WV (WOAY)- The West Virginia Senate has elected Senator Randy Smith as its newest president.
Smith, who represents Tucker County, is a former coal miner who was first elected to the state senate in 2016.
The vote, which happened behind closed doors Sunday night, finished with him ahead of Eric Tarr from Putnam County and Tom Takubo from Kanawha County.
Smith takes over from President Craig Blair, who lost a primary election in May.
Roger Hanshaw was re-elected as speaker of the House of Delegates.
