Richlands, VA (WOAY) The Richlands Police Department is introducing its newest officer, K9 Nala.
Nala is one of only a few explosives and firearms detection dogs in the region and will work alongside her handler, Officer Draven Baldwin.
The department says the new K-9 program was made possible through several grants, including a $16,5000 LEAP Grant from K9 Working Dogs International, a $5,000 grant from the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors, and a $7,500 grant from the American Kennel Club.
Officials say the funding will help cover the cost of the dog, specialized equipment, and advanced training.
Once fully deployed, K9 Nala will assist with school safety checks, event security sweeps, and responses to critical incidents in Richlands and surrounding communities.
The department says the program strengthens proactive safety measures and improves emergency response across the region.
