Renewed Flooding Will Hit Region This Weekend; Winter Storm Early Next Week

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): While rivers are just starting to recede from Thursday’s storm, a new storm will guarantee more flooding this weekend.

TIMING: The first drops will move into the southern coalfields and Greenbrier Valley around 2 a.m., and continue north along Route 19 between 3-5 a.m. There will be a brief period of freezing drizzle, changing to all rain along Route 19 by 6 a.m. Only car windshields and railings will be a little icy during this time.

Fog (above 2,500 feet) and light rain will persist through the day.

Between 2-7 p.m., the warm front will push through. When this happens, a few thunder rumbles and heavy downpours are expected. Flooding is likely to get underway. The second round of heavy showers will occur between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. when the cold front pushes through.

All told, 1.0-1.5″ of rain is expected Saturday into early Sunday. Areal Flood Watches are expected to be hoisted for much of our region.

Ice Storm Warnings will be issued for western Greenbrier County and Pocahontas County where 0.25-0.30″ of ice is expected Saturday. Winter Weather Advisories are expected for eastern Fayette and Raleigh County where 0.10″ of ice is expected.

NEXT WINTER STORM: TUESDAY

Snow will start before daybreak, change to sleet and freezing rain during the day, likely rain by late afternoon and then turning to a brief period of snow overnight Tuesday. All told, 2″ of snow is expected, with upside risk to 4″ and light icing is expected. Winter Storm Watches will be issued ahead of this storm.

More rain Wednesday into early Thursday will trigger MORE flooding.
