West Virginia (WOAY)—The American Red Cross is urging the public to donate blood, which could save lives.
While many Americans are gearing up for summer travel and outdoor activities, the Red Cross reminds everyone that emergencies don’t take a holiday.
With increased accidents expected during the busy summer kickoff, blood donations, especially from Type O donors, are in critical demand.
The organization asks people to make blood donation appointments during May’s Trauma Awareness Month.
Type O blood is the most requested by hospitals and is often crucial in trauma situations where patients may need dozens — even hundreds — of units.
The Red Cross is offering several incentives to encourage donations.
Anyone who gives blood through Saturday, May 31, will receive a free solar lantern while supplies last.
Donors can also win a trip for two anywhere in the U.S.
In June, donors will receive a $15 Amazon gift card by email and be entered to win one of two $7,000 gift cards.
