Oak Hill, WV (WOAY): Each Halloween, thousands celebrate with costumes, trick-or-treating, parties, candy, and sometimes drinking. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a few tips to keep in mind for a fun and safe Halloween.
Drivers:
- First, drivers should slow down and continuously scan the road for trick-or-treaters and other pedestrians.
- Be aware that children may be unaware of traffic and dart into the street unexpectedly.
- If you see a drunk driver, call law enforcement immediately.
Pedestrians:
- Before festivities begin, pedestrians should consider creating a buddy system to get each other home safely and prevent walking alone.
- Follow the rules of the road and obey signs and traffic signals.
- Look carefully for cars in all directions, including those turning left or right at intersections.
Parties:
- Those going to parties should always choose a designated driver or schedule a ride-sharing service before drinking.
- Responsible party hosts should also do their part to make sure guests get home safely.
- Collect car keys from guests who are drinking.
- Provide non-alcoholic beverage options.
- Be prepared to call ridesharing services or drive drunk guests home yourself.
Above all, never drink and drive for any reason, as even a small amount of alcohol can affect your driving ability.
