OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It was a very warm afternoon around the area, with almost everyone getting into the lower 80s, the only exceptions being in the highest elevations of Pocahontas and Greenbrier Counties. Both Beckley and Lewisburg have set unofficial record highs for the date. Both cities reached 83 degrees, breaking the records of 82 degrees in Beckley on this date in 2012 and 81 degrees in Lewisburg on this date in 2018.

The mild weather will last through the night, and by tomorrow morning, temperatures will be in similar territory to where they were this morning.

Tomorrow will be another nice day, although not quite as warm as it was today. Highs will still be in the upper 70s and lower 80s, and it’s a great day for any outdoor plans, with the exception of burning, which is banned anyway during most of the day this time of the year. Tomorrow night is when the changes to the weather begin. A low passes to the north of the area and pulls up more moisture-laden air from the Gulf. Meanwhile, a weak disturbance at the surface will trigger some showers and perhaps a thunderstorm or two tomorrow night and into Friday morning.

Any showers and storms will be scattered, and while some moisture is available, any rain totals from this first round will be light.
Another stretch of dry weather takes us through Friday afternoon and evening and into the weekend. Ahead of the second system that we’ll be tracking, it will be very warm again, with highs back in the lower 80s. This time, the record highs in our area are in the mid- to upper 80s, so we should avoid setting any new heat records, but it will still be a very warm day. Saturday night, the second system arrives, and the rain chances go up significantly.

This time, we will see some decent rainfall, and while it may not be any fun to see rain during the weekend, given how dry it is at the moment, the rain is a good thing. The chances for rain last through Sunday before ending.
As we start the next traditional work week, the cold air behind the second system will keep our temperatures well below normal and massively below where they were on Saturday. Highs on Monday won’t even break the 60-degree mark. Lows both Monday and Tuesday morning will be around the freezing mark. What a change from the 80s that we saw today! The good news for warm-weather lovers is that the cooldown is only a temporary one. Highs should be right back to around 70 degrees by next Wednesday.
