OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We’ve been tracking some showers that are pushing through the area this afternoon and evening.
There won’t be a lot of rain, but every drop helps at this point, as much of the area is in some level of drought.
The rain chances will last for the next few hours before tapering off overnight. The bulk of the showers will be along and south of Route 460. With the cloud cover and a light southwesterly flow, lows will be in the upper 50s.
Tomorrow, a disturbance will approach the area from the northwest. It will trigger some showers and perhaps an isolated storm in the area.
The number of showers will be very small, however, so the big story of the day will be the heat. Highs will push toward the 80-degree mark, reaching and exceeding it in many areas. Overall, it should be a good day for the warm-weather lovers. Lows tomorrow night will be mild again, a couple of degrees warmer than tonight.
By Wednesday, the heat is really on for us, as highs will reach or exceed records in most areas. Certainly, it looks like a record-setting day in Beckley, where we’re forecasting the record high for the date (82 degrees set back in 2012) to fall. It’s also possible that other areas will also see records. Bluefield’s record high is also 82 degrees (set on the same day as the Beckley record), while Lewisburg’s record high is 81 degrees, set in 2018.
Later in the forecast, the rain chances finally pick up a bit as a southwesterly flow will give us a summerlike feel to the weather, including a chance for showers and storms. Rain totals over the next week will not be all that impressive and won’t be enough to alleviate the drought.
Another very warm day starts the weekend before another strong front rolls through on Sunday, dropping temperatures by more than 20 degrees between Saturday and Monday. But even this cooldown is only temporary; the days beyond the extended forecast will feature another warmup.
