Commission on Drunk Driving Prevention being considered for $10K DUI Enforcement Grant

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – The West Virginia Commission on Drunk Driving Prevention (c/o the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office) is applying for a $10,000 DUI enforcement grant.

This could include direct patrol, where officers actively stop lawbreakers, and sobriety checkpoints in certain areas of the county for signs of alcohol or drug impairment.

The Sheriff’s Office will find out before February 23 (when this is supposed to kick off) if they were approved and have 90 days to use the money. It is an 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. grant.

“We always emphasize the weekends because typically weekends people are off work, engaging in social activities and might be going out, getting a drink before making that unfortunate decision to drive,” said Lt. Jason L. Redden. “The drug epidemic in our area persists 24-7-365, so we have those complaints all the time. Officers will be looking for both — not just alcohol-impaired drivers, anything that will impair a person’s ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.”
