Fayette County Sheriff’s Department warns the community about phone scam after receiving reports of callers impersonating law enforcement

Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department is warning the public about a phone scam.

Sheriff Jess McMullen states that the department has received reports that residents are getting calls from individuals identifying themselves as law enforcement.

The callers are telling residents that they have outstanding warrants and demanding immediate payment from them to avoid arrests.

Some are requesting victims to pay the fine using gift cards, prepaid debit cards, and electronic payment apps.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department stresses that these calls are fake and that they will never contact you by phone to pay warrants or fines.

Sheriff McMullen further states that they will never require anyone to pay using a gift card or other similar methods.

Authorities report that scammers often create a sense of urgency or fear with these calls to get victims to act immediately.
Callers also may use the names of real officers and manipulate caller ID systems to make it appear as though the call is coming from a legitimate law enforcement number.
The Sheriff’s department urges residents not to provide any personal or financial information to these callers and not to send money under any circumstances.
If you receive such a call, you are advised to hang up immediately.
