Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department warning of grandparent bail scam

Authorities warn of scam alert

RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office is investigating reports of a grandparent bail scam occurring in our area.

The Sheriff’s Department posted the following on Facebook:

Please be aware that the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office is investigating reports of a Grandparent bail scam occurring in this area. There are multiple versions of this scam, commonly the scammer will call an elderly person claiming to be the victim’s grandchild or other relatives. The scammer will likely know the names of relatives and friends associated with the victim. The scammer will claim that they have been arrested out of town and need cash or another form of payment shipped somewhere so they can post a bond and get out of jail. They will usually ask the victim not to notify other relatives for various reasons.

If you receive a call like this, do not send any form of payment. Notify your local law enforcement agency. You can also file a report online at https://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx
