Bishop Evelio Menjivar Ayala has been appointed by Pope Leo the 14th as the 10th bishop of the Wheeling-Charleston Diocese.
Bishop Menjivar will succeed Bishop Mark Brennan, who will remain as Apostolic Administrator for the Diocese through July 1st.
Bishop Brennan said of Bishop Menjivar, “Many faithful across the diocese and I have prayed to god for a true shepherd of the people to lead our diocese into the future. I truly believe God has answered our prayers with the appointment of Bishop Evelio Menjivar.”
Bishop Menjivar was born in El Salvador in 1970, migrated to the US in 1990, and became Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Washington in 2023, making him the first Salvadoran Bishop in the country.
The Mass of Installation will be celebrated on Thursday, July 2nd, at 2:00 in the afternoon, at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Wheeling.
