BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – ‘Tis the season of merry and bright. But scams also abound.
Raleigh County Sheriff Jim Canaday says there isn’t a level that people won’t stoop to if they think they can get away with something or it’s an easy score.
“If somebody thinks you’re not paying attention to them, that’s when they target you. So just be mindful,” Canaday said. “Be mindful of what you have in your car. Be careful of where you’re parking. If you’re out at night, try to park under lights or at least in a well-lit area. Try to cover up the stuff that you have in your car because somebody else may try to steal that.”
Facebook doesn’t need to know about your empty house if you’re going on vacation.
“Don’t take a picture of the gifts under your tree and then say, ‘Hey, we’re gonna be out of town.’ That’s almost an open invitation,” said the sheriff. “Just be aware of what you’re posting and don’t advertise when you’re leaving.”
According to Canaday, you should be able to enjoy the holidays and do it safely, free from scams and other bad influences.
“If you’re gonna be out celebrating, obviously it goes without saying the holidays see an increased incidence of drunken driving; don’t do that,” he said. “Have a designated driver, call somebody to pick you up. One holiday celebration is not worth changing your life or somebody else’s.”
Be present and ensure you’re not oblivious to immediate sights, sounds, and colors.
“Don’t be afraid to look around or make eye contact with people,” said the sheriff. “The best thing we can do is not go out with the victim mindset — be vigilant (and) aware of your surroundings.”
