Raleigh County Schools kicks off 2024-2025 school year with back-to-school fair

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – As the summer winds down, school is not on everyone’s mind just yet (even though Raleigh County starts August 22nd).

So they are ensuring their students are prepared, and that was evident at today’s packed back-to-school fair.

“Our goal with this fair 1) is to connect students with their schools. Every school has a booth here,” said Superintendent Dr. Serena Starcher. “But then, it’s also an opportunity to connect our families and children with resources right here in Raleigh County.”

This Coal City resident enjoyed the back-to-school fair visit she had with her daughter and called it helpful that Raleigh County provides such a resource for the community.

“Big turnout. Bigger than years past,” Ashley Wilcox said. “I think COVID really kind of kept people away. Wish every county could do this.”

The booths are geared to students of all grade levels, who receive free school supplies, bookbags, underwear, socks and much more.

“Our children in Raleigh county schools experience the bookmobile. The bookmobile visits our schools throughout the year,” said Starcher. “But this gives them an opportunity to do it here with their parents.”

These young girls appreciate the bookmobile.

“Just came here to get stuff,” said almost pre-ker Journey.
“I like the books.”

And for kindergartner Maelynn, it’s all about Dr. Suess.

“Cat in the Hat. I’m going to get one (book),” she said.

Starcher says she loves that the back-to-school fair is the official kick-off to school.

“This is the first time we really get to see students for the coming school year,” the superintendent said. “We have many booths. We give free haircuts. Our cosmetology program from ACT does that. There are so many students; they are very appreciative.”
