Rain tonight, snow by morning

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We are seeing the rain fall this evening around the area, as a line of showers ahead of a strong cold front is pushing through. There are a couple of rumbles of thunder, but the showers have weakened considerably as they pushed into the state from Kentucky.

One of the usual reasons that we see weakening over West Virginia with these fronts is that they lose the heating of the day. But that is not the case this evening. Temperatures are still in the upper 60s and lower 70s at 10 o’clock!

The warmth at this hour comes on the heels of another record-setting day in both Beckley and Bluefield. Both cities wound up in the mid to upper 70s, and Pineville was even warmer. At 5 p.m., they were sitting at 85 degrees!

All of the warm weather comes to a screeching halt early tomorrow morning as the cold front that has given us such rough weather over parts of the Midwest comes roaring through. Temperature differences ahead of and behind the front are quite dramatic.

With the precipitation continuing and the temperatures falling, some of what falls will fall in a wintry form.

With the temperatures so warm over the last couple of days, most of what falls will melt, but roads will still be wet for the commute tomorrow morning. Some accumulation is even possible, but it shouldn’t last too long before melting away.

The snow that does fall should end by late morning, and the sun will come out. Despite that, temperatures will struggle to get into the 40s as the cold air takes hold. But warmer weather won’t be denied for too long before making a comeback by Friday and into the weekend. But this warming trend is also only temporary, as another front will come into the region and give us more chances for rain and snow on Monday, driving our temperatures back down in the process. We end the extended forecast colder than normal.
