Protesters gather in downtown Beckley for George Floyd

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – Protesters gathered in downtown Beckley over the police-involved death of George Floyd.

About 15 people gathered to protest this morning. The protesters were seen peacefully protesting in front of the Word Park as early as at 11 am. Protectors held signs while screaming black lives matter. Protest organizer Aaron Barnes says they just want their voices to be heard.

“We need the police to be here for our homeless residents, for our poor residents, for our black residents, for our queer residents. We don’t need bigotry; we need community oversight. The police can not hold themselves accountable; we need citizens to provide the oversight, not the police,” said Barnes.

The protest organizer Aaron Barnes says they plan on organizing more protests.
