WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): As we prepare for a very busy weather week, what comes next?
We told you earlier in the month the polar vortex was going to weaken considerably. The recent trends support the weakening of the polar vortex later this week. It will then drift towards the Hudson Bay early next week.
The transition to a Greenland High weather pattern is typical with a weakening of the vortex.
So, that got us thinking….what is our pattern like when a strong Greenland block develops in the middle of February and fades away at the end of the month.
Below are three similarly-matched years where a strong Greenland block faded. They show the temperature trends for Beckley. We tend to see the coldest temperatures going into the peak of the pattern and coming out of the pattern, with a few very warm days during the peak of the block.
So, given the expected trends, this means we should expect a few warm days around February 16-19 and then a sharp temperature drop off in temperatures between February 20-24.
What about snowfall?
As you can see below, we tend to get a snowfall going into the Block pattern and then 4-6 days after the block starts to break down. This supports the upcoming snow expected Tuesday.
When will we get our final snow in this pattern? Likely between February 22-25.
Keep with the StormWatch 4 weather team for the latest on our crazy weather pattern!
