Pistos Coffee jam sessions engaging the community

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – The goal of Pistos Coffee was always to bring the community back together. Get folks to sit down and talk to each other one cup at a time.

“We wanted to create an atmosphere that would change that thought process. And so we wanted to bring people into a place that felt comfortable,” said Pistos Coffee volunteer & First Brethren Church Pastor Mike Meadows. “These guys, they’ve been coming as regular customers for a while, but they came and said, ‘Hey, would it be okay if we came in and played some music?’ And we’re like, ‘Sure because that’s part of community.”

They connected with everyone through these impromptu jam sessions.

“Because Pistos is a community place and we thought we would bring a little joy and a little music to the place,” said jamming musician Joe Sorrento.

After the band’s first time jamming at Pistos was well received and people joined in with them as a singalong, the musicians decided to return.

“We wanted to encourage people if you’re a musician or like to sing just come out and join them and have a good time,” Meadows said. “As we come together as a community and get to know one another in fellowship, ’cause that’s what it’s all about.”

As soon as you walk into Pistos you feel such a welcoming atmosphere.

“It has wonderful energy, it’s very peaceful (with) good people,” said Sorrent.

Put away your cell phones, kick back at Pistos and soak up the great music.

“We forget to take the time to slow down a little bit and enjoy life,” the pastor said. “And this is just a great way to do that, to slow down and just remember that the simple things are sometimes the best things.”
