Parkersburg, WV (WOAY) Cleanup efforts at the Peoples Cartage warehouse in Parkersburg have been temporarily halted.
The West Virginia Department of Health issued a cease-and-desist order after officials determined asbestos-containing materials may be present at the site following the July 5 fire.
Because of the building’s age and conditions observed during cleanup, the company must now use licensed asbestos contractors to evaluate and safely remove debris.
Acting State Health Officer Dr. Mark McDaniel says asbestos-related illnesses are generally linked to significant, repeated exposure over time rather than brief exposure.
However, anyone experiencing persistent coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, or other respiratory symptoms should contact a healthcare provider.
State officials say cleanup can resume once appropriate safety measures are in place.
