October 5-11 is Banned Books Week

West Virginia (WOAY)- October 5-11 is Banned Books Week.

The week is a national celebration of the freedom to read, and a reminder of the power of stories that challenge, inspire, and connect us.

In West Virginia, local readers and community groups are highlighting the importance of access to books for all ages.

One way residents are doing that is through Little Free Libraries, those boxes you see in neighborhoods and near schools, allowing anyone to take a book or leave one behind.

From Charleston to Beckley, and all across the Mountain State, these libraries help keep banned and challenged books available to everyone.

Organizers say it’s about protecting the right to read and ensuring that stories remain within reach of every West Virginian.

You can find a map of Little Free Libraries near you or learn how to start your own by visiting littlefreelibrary.org.
