WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): The large-scale layoffs within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will have major implications on the dissemination of weather information.
Chief Meteorologist Chad Merrill has more:
The following services will be impacted:
Timely arrival and dissemination of ALL weather alerts, INCLUDING the Emergency Alert System Alerts (Tornado Warnings, Flash Flood Emergencies)
Lack of engineers to repair radars, weather sensors (this would leave a big gap or void in the available data for short-term forecasting for every outlet (TV, Radio, NWS, Private Industry)
Lack of methods to receive weather alerts (weather apps would be blank, no EAS delivery as mentioned above and NOAA weather radio would vanish)
Satellite, radar and forecast model data would not be available. This would put an end to conventional methods of forecasting.
