OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It was a pleasant day around the area, with lots of sunshine and temperatures that were warmer than they were on Monday afternoon.
There was a bit of a breeze, and it was quite dry. While that raised the fire danger a bit, it was not to levels that would lead the National Weather Service to issue any sort of advisories. Tonight, that dry air is allowing temperatures to fall quickly now that the sun has set. We’ll wind up in the middle 30s around the area, about 10 degrees warmer than it was this morning.
Tomorrow will be a spectacular day around the area, with highs in the mid-60s and a mix of sun and clouds. Winds won’t be quite as breezy, making it feel even more pleasant outside. The warming trend continues tomorrow night as well, as lows are in the mid-to upper 40s.
As you might expect this time of the year, the warmup is ahead of a storm and a series of fronts that will pass through the region over the next few days. By Thursday, a warm front will overspread the region, driving highs near 70 degrees and triggering a few showers during the day.
Off to our north and northwest, meanwhile, we could see some strong to severe storms as a squall line is expected to develop over portions of Ohio and Indiana. By the time it gets here on Friday, it is expected to weaken quite a bit, but rumbles of thunder can’t be ruled out, along with some standing water in low-lying spots and ponding of water on the roads – the usual nuisance flooding.
The big story is what happens behind the cold front that comes through on Friday night and Saturday morning. Similar to previous fronts that have pushed through the region, temperatures behind this front will take a nosedive. Friday will still be relatively mild as the cold air hasn’t fully made its presence known. Friday night, lows will drop into the upper 20s, which means that any precipitation that is still falling could change over to a mix of rain and snow. This threat is especially possible in the high-elevation areas. Saturday will be quite cold, with highs in the upper 40s. Readings rebound on Sunday and beyond, and the temperature roller coaster is in effect.
