Nice weather is here, more rain is needed

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It was a nice afternoon around southern West Virginia, but despite the drier air, there will be some patchy fog, so we’ll have to be careful on the roads tomorrow morning.

Overall, it will feel quite pleasant outside compared to the muggy and mild mornings that we’ve seen over the past few days. Lows will be in the upper 40s and lower 50s, with the coolest temperatures in the usual areas.

Tomorrow will be a very nice day, with highs in the upper 70s in most areas, with lower 80s in some isolated spots. There will be plenty of sunshine, as well as high pressure centered over the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which is in charge of our weather. A light northerly flow won’t keep our temperatures down this time of the year. Tomorrow night will feature lows close to where they’ll be tonight, but with dry air firmly in place, we’ll avoid any patchy fog.
We will keep the dry weather over the next seven days, with only two possible exceptions. The first will come on Saturday as a low pushing to our northeast will give us a very small chance for rain. The low will drag a front through the region, but with almost all of the moisture locked up by another low to our southwest, it will be hard to squeeze out any rain. The best chance will be in the far southern areas.
The next chance will be on Monday in mainly the same area with the same setup as Saturday. Monday’s chances for rain are slightly better than Saturday’s, but are only at 20%.
Of course, the downside to this dry weather is that we were in severe drought going into the week. We did see some improvement in the drought monitor that was released today. Areas that were in extreme drought are now in severe drought; one step better than it was last week. In Pocahontas County, the drought that had been severe is now moderate. One other factor in our favor: the rain that we saw this week wasn’t factored into the current drought monitor. Still, we do need more rain.
Temperatures this week and next will be close to normal on both ends of the scale. After Monday’s front goes through, temperatures will fall off slightly before rebounding.
