The heat is on this week

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It was a warm start to the traditional work week with temperatures in the lower to middle 80s, a few degrees above the normal. Later tonight, we’ll drop into the middle 60s, also a shade above the normal. There is a possibility for patchy fog as well, especially in areas that picked up rain yesterday, but also due to the extra humidity that is coming into the area with the flow turning to the southwest tomorrow.

Tomorrow, the long-anticipated heat wave begins in earnest as highs will be in the middle to upper 80s and with the little bit of humidity, will feel like they’re in the lower 90s in most areas. Tomorrow is also the day where the concern for heat related issues will have to become part of the plan for the day; extra precautions will become even more necessary than usual for those who have to be outside. Remember to take extra breaks or find a shady spot if you have to be outside for long periods of time.
The other issue with heat waves is that the lows don’t fall off very much at night, making it feel increasingly uncomfortable in places that don’t have air conditioning. That will be the case with this heat wave as well, as lows will be in the upper 60s to right around 70 degrees, starting tomorrow night.
Wednesday through Friday we will be in the grips of the heat wave, with highs in the 90s each day. The hottest day will be on Thursday, when highs on average will push the middle 90s. Even Bluefield, where 90-degree highs are so rare that the city gives away lemonade each time the temperature reaches that lofty level, should see a high around that mark. With the humidity factored in, the heat index will definitely be above 90 degrees everywhere, including in the “air-conditioned city”.
Later in the forecast, the heat wave eases slightly, but we’ll still see highs in the middle to upper 80s. The other addition to the forecast will be the chance for showers and storms as a front will approach from the northwest. Chances for rain won’t be great, but it will be nice to see some rain to help cool things off.
What it will mainly do is to increase the humidity levels even more, giving us a true summerlike feel to our weather. Next Monday could be active as a disturbance will be parked just to our south, but there is uncertainty in the forecast at the moment.
