Nice today, showers arrive tomorrow

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – Despite some clouds, it was a mild afternoon around southern West Virginia. Highs today were in the middle to upper 50s in many areas and in the lower 60s in the usual warmer spots. Tonight, the clouds stick around, and without the usual radiational cooling, that keeps temperatures on the mild side. We’ll drop into the middle 40s, close to where the average highs are this time of the year!

Tomorrow, all of the severe weather that has been hammering the western part of the nation will begin to make its way into our area. We start with a weaker line of low pressure that will trigger some showers.
The line that pushes through will be a quick hitter, and the rain should end by tomorrow evening. Rain totals will be light to moderate. Similar to today, the clouds won’t do anything to cool us off, as highs tomorrow will be in similar territory to where they were today.
Much more rain is expected as the main portion of the storm comes through. Ahead of the cool front, strong southwesterly flow will drive our temperatures even higher, as most areas will wind up in the lower 60s. The rain starts in the afternoon and evening, and in the area south of the warm front, there is enough instability in the atmosphere to possibly produce some thunder for the first time this year.
Along with the warm air comes good amounts of moisture from the Gulf, meaning that rain totals will be decent, generally over an inch. In areas where there is a decent snowpack, there could be some flooding concerns. For us, that’s mostly in a few parts of Pocahontas County.
There is also a chance for a secondary low to push through, which would lead to more rain and snow, but the track of this possible next low is uncertain.
Behind the low temperatures are going to take a tumble, as the mild weather gives way to below normal highs again. We’ll only top out in the middle to upper 30s from Sunday to the end of the extended forecast next Tuesday. With the colder air and a northwesterly wind, some lake-effect snow will be possible throughout the area from Sunday into Monday, especially in the higher elevations. How much is still in question, with the major atmospheric models showing the usual drastic differences, not surprisingly, this far out.
