Next steps for Fayette County Humane Society

FAYETTEVILLE, WV (WOAY) – It’s been a roller coaster for the Fayette County Humane Society, culminating in its break from the Fayette County Commission.

They are ready to move on and share what that looks like.

“We’ve had a rough road here, but we’re looking forward to a brighter future,” said Executive Director Fallyn Wakefield. “It is a really sad situation, but we’re also excited to see what happens next.”

It’s difficult to say goodbye to all the furry friends that the team nurtured for some time.

“I don’t even know how to put that into words,” Wakefield said. “A lot of these dogs and cats have been with us for a year or two. We’re all they know, and they’re all we know. They made an everlasting imprint on our hearts.”

She says they have definite concerns about transitioning to the new group.

“We are nervous. It’s more of how the animals are going to react,” said the executive director. “And some of these dogs, especially, are only used to us; when it comes to strangers, they’re not really that happy to see other people. So that makes us a little worried.”

According to the Fayette County Humane Society, things with the Fayette County Commission are extremely challenging, and they are still going head-to-head. I reached out to the commission president today but received no response.

“That’s not what we want. At the end of the day, what we want is to let us do what we need to do here for the next 17 days,” Wakefield said. “We’ll be out of this building. You won’t ever have to deal with us again. But it’s like, we get so far and then it’s like a roadblock. It’s almost like they can’t leave it alone.”

She said they bought a building and will be setting that up so they can continue their mission.

“What people won’t see is, we’ll still be behind the scenes, saving animals and doing what we do,” said Wakefield.”
