BEAVER, WV (WOAY) – School is back in session for New River Community and Technical College after the summer break.
But the need for blood doesn’t take a break so they partnered with the American Red Cross to address the national blood shortage. Giving is in line with the college’s mission.
According to the American Red Cross, remnants of Hurricane Debby and other severe weather events have further complicated efforts to replenish America’s blood supply. Licensed Practical Nursing student Emma Thomas says that’s why donating means so much to her.
“Because there’s so many people in need who can’t have any (blood) ’cause there’s nobody who does want to donate,” Thomas said. “So it’s good to always donate.”
New River CTC is all about giving in some way to students something they want and need — an accessible, affordable education.
“And so reflecting that in this way, obviously, it’s a way to give and an even bigger way to give something that’s bigger than us,” said Director of Communications Mykah Price. There are people with a serious need out there and any way that we’re able to contribute and give to that, we would want to be a part of.”
With the American Red Cross app, you can track your donation.
“You could see who you helped out and there’s so many people it can help,” Thomas said.
Donating is a good way to do something outside yourself to transform someone else’s life. It’s Kirsten Smith’s second time.
“There’s always things that happen, unfortunately — could be an accident, like a health condition,” said the LPN student. “It just gives back to those who really need it.”
