New River Conservancy hosting Spring River Clean Up events starting April 18

Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) It’s river cleanup season, and volunteers are gearing up to make a difference along the New River.

The New River Conservancy has three cleanup events scheduled this spring, giving community members the chance to roll up their sleeves and help protect one of the region’s most treasured natural resources.

The first cleanup is set for April 18, covering the stretch from Glade to Grandview.

Then on May 10, crews will work from Thayer to Stonecliff, followed by a third cleanup on May 16, from The Point in Hinton to Camp Brookside.

Volunteers can bring their own watercraft or reserve a limited number of raft seats available for each event.

All supplies, such as bags, gloves, and litter pickers, will be provided along with lunch.

Organizers say these events are not only impactful but fun, with thousands of pounds of trash removed from the river each year.

Last year alone, volunteers collected more than 30-thousand pounds.

Additional cleanups could be added this summer, and any groups interested in partnering are encouraged to reach out.
