New Concord University President Dr. Bethany Meighen: This special place is such a blessing

ATHENS, WV (WOAY) – It was a big day on the Concord University campus, as Dr. Bethany Meighen was celebrated as its 13th president.

With Dr. Kendra Boggess retiring this August, the college’s board of governors came to a unanimous decision.

“To be a part of this special place is such a blessing for my family and me,” said Meighen. “We’re looking forward to helping grow the Concord name and students achieving their dreams. I’m pinching myself still, can’t believe we’re back in West Virginia and I get to be at the best place there could be in the state.”

The college has launched nursing and physician assistant programs, and trains many teachers and social workers.

“These are professions we need in the world to continue to help strengthen enrollment. I also think there’s a lot of negativity around higher education,” the longtime educator said.  “Folks are curious about the cost, is there a return on investment? Let me tell you, there is a return on investment for a Concord degree. So my two big goals would be: help enrollment and change this narrative.”

What does higher education look like in 2025? Meighen says there will be residential campuses because students still want that experience, as well as virtual learning.

“More flexibility, a lot more adult learners, and changing the traditional academic calendar because people want to start whenever they can, not wait until August or December,” said the new Concord president. “So I see it being more accessible and much of it being online.”

Meighen is currently vice president of academic and student affairs for the UNC system. She has strong West Virginia roots.

“Being in the system, working with 16 different types of institutions has prepared me well to come to Concord, the longtime educator said. “I have a lot of experience in enrollment management, I have a lot of experience in student success and career development.”

She is excited to bring that North Carolina knowledge to this great community.

“I need to listen and learn; Concord is doing amazing things already,” said Meighen. “So, how do I keep building on the wonderful legacy of Dr. Boggess?”
