National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warns used car owners against faulty replacement airbag inflators

West Virginia (CNN)- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has a warning for drivers who purchase a used car.

Get your airbags checked.

The agency says cheap, substandard replacement airbag inflators were tied to three deaths and two life-altering injuries in the past year.

The faulty airbag parts are typically imported and don’t adhere to quality standards.

The NHTSA says the airbags may deploy partially or too slowly or send large metal fragments into drivers’ and passengers’ chests, necks, eyes, and faces.

The agency recommends checking a used vehicle’s history report.

If the car has been in a crash, have a mechanic inspect the airbags to ensure the replacement parts are genuine.
