FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – It’s that time of year, yes, the 34th Mount Hope Jubilee is kicking off September 19 and 20.
It pulls in so many people — locally, regionally, and even from out of state.
Though the school closed down several years ago, it hasn’t stopped the Mount Hope school spirit. They are forever mustangs.
“That’s what you see, the pictures and all that,” said Chairperson Patty Logan. “We spend time with each other on Friday night. We have the alumni association get together, and then we have Music Director Bobby Dorado doing a tribute to Motown.”
That will start on Friday at 5 pm in front of the gym.
“And at 6 pm I’ve got a gal, Karen James Buckland, coming in and she’ll do gospel music for about an hour,” Dorado said. “Then I’ll come back at seven and we’ll mix it up; I’ve got a lot of oldies and a lot of rock and roll.”
According to Logan, the Mount Hope Fire Department hosts a fireworks show.
“It’s some of the best fireworks I’ve ever seen. In fact, it was the biggest fireworks I’ve ever seen,” the chairperson said, adding that they are lucky everybody in town tries to help.
Seeing folks she has known for more than 50 years is the best part of the jubilee for Logan.
“It’s everybody getting together and spending time together because we don’t have time to do that during the year,” said the jubilee chairperson.
From arts and crafts to food vendors, there is so much to see. You don’t want to miss the parade on Sept. 20 at 10 am.
There’s such a sense of nostalgia.
“I was born and raised in this town. I had a business in this town for 42 years, and I still live here,” Dorado said. “Even though we don’t have the school, we have a lot of alumni who like to come back and that’ll be the get-together on Friday night. I’ve been a part of this for ten years.”
