OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It is a wet start to the day around southern West Virginia as a front is rolling through the region, triggering showers and storms. Some of these were on the strong side but weakened as they pushed to the southeast this morning. What we’re seeing now is some light stratiform showers on the back side of the front.

What the front will also do is, not surprisingly, sharply drop our temperatures through the day and night. Despite increasing sunshine, temperatures will actually fall as the day goes on. We started in the mid-to-upper 50s, but will be falling into the middle 40s by this afternoon.

The cooling trend behind the front continues as we go through the night, and by tomorrow morning, lows will be in the middle 20s. It’s about 10 degrees below the normal, but it will feel even colder due to the wind, and also in relative terms because it’s been so warm over the past few days.

Tomorrow will be a seasonable day around the region, with highs in the lower to mid-50s. It’s the start of another warming trend, with high temperatures climbing to near 70 degrees by Thursday. As is usually the case this time of year, warmer temperatures are ahead of a front approaching the area from the northwest. Behind the front, highs will drop back into the lower 60s at first and then into the mid-40s by the start of the weekend. With another system coming into the area on Friday and bringing fresh precipitation, some of what we see could fall in the wintry form, especially in the higher elevations, Friday night and Saturday morning.
