Monroe County, WV (WOAY) – The Monroe County Health Department says a raccoon in the area of Second Creek Road has tested positive for rabies.
The department is urging residents to make sure pets and livestock have up-to-date rabies vaccinations, a precaution officials say helps keep animals healthy and prevents the spread to humans.
Anyone who spots a sick or injured animal is asked to call the 911 non-emergency line at 304-772-3912. If handling a sick or dead animal is necessary, the health department advises wearing gloves and using a pitchfork or shovel.
