West Virginia (WOAY) – The Monongahela National Forest announces two prescribed fires this April.
Forest officials estimate the work will continue through the spring as weather conditions allow.
Prescribed fires help reduce overgrown vegetation and protect local communities, infrastructure, and natural resources from wildfires.
Affected areas will include the middle mountain units on forest system road 790 in Pocahontas County and the brushy mountain units at the Pond and Slash Lick road in Greenbrier County.
Burn areas may be closed for several days for public safety.
Road signs will be placed to notify travelers in the area.
However, drivers are advised to slow down and turn on their headlights if they encounter smoke on the road.
Inclement weather may impact the burn schedule, and officials will evaluate weather conditions hours before a burn out of an abundance of caution.
