Local veteran initiates Adopt a Veteran Program at Beckley VAMC

Beckley, WV (WOAY) –  To mark this Giving Tuesday, one local veteran has started a program offering a helping hand to veterans in need during the holidays.

Stephen Barlow founded the Adopt a Veteran initiative at the Beckley Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) to help reduce social isolation and food insecurity among his fellow veterans.

The program is a community-based venture, recruiting volunteers to provide hot meals, transportation, and other support services for at-risk veterans.

Beckley VAMC says people can support the cause by donating their time, money, or personal care items.

In addition to the Adopt a Veteran Program, Barlow has contributed to the new Veterans Outpatient Recreation Program, providing recreational opportunities for outpatient veterans.

Barlow will also solely fund the first annual Hot Chocolate Bar social event, which will kick off in December.

The event will be open to all Veterans and VA employees at Beckley, Greenbrier, and Princeton medical centers.
