SUMMERSVILLE, WV (WOAY) – Gauley Season 2020 officially kicks off this week.
This time of year, the dam at Summersville Lake is released, creating guaranteed flow on the Gauley River. For 6 weekends in September and October, rafters from around the world visit to take on the Gauley River.
“Gauley season usually starts the weekend after Labor Day weekend. The core starts releasing water out of the lake and the rafting is the best time of the year,” said Susan James.
Mountain Lake Campground owner Susan James says every year during Gauley season her campground is completely booked out with guests. Despite COVID, she still expects this year to be no different.
“Customers come in and look at campsites. It normally goes from Thursday from Sunday and they have a great time,” said James.
Ace Adventure Resort’s Gauley Fest has canceled, But James says there are other activities for visitors to enjoy.
“The trails around here are beautiful. They can still put boats in the lake and go fishing. Fishing this time of the year is pretty good,” said James.
