Kanawha River cleanup event canceled due to coronavirus

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A cleanup event along the Kanawha River in West Virginia has been canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Great Kanawha River Cleanup is expected to resume next year. This would have been the event’s 31st year. It is sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan.

The cleanup is usually held the first Saturday of September to help clean up sites along the Kanawha River, including Winfield Beach, the South Charleston boat ramp and Kanawha Falls at Glen Ferris.

Last year, 133 volunteers spent a total of 290 hours to help remove 3 1/2 tons of litter and 361 tires from six sites along the Kanawha River and its tributaries.
