Fayette County, WV (WOAY) – Perhaps you’ve seen a snake slithering across the ground recently.
It wouldn’t be surprising, as the hottest months of the year are peak snake season. It also happens to be the Timber Rattler’s mating season.
The heat allows these cold-blooded reptiles to be more active, leading to more encounters with humans.
The most common snake in our area is the black rat snake, which is not venomous. We do have two venomous snakes here, which are the Timber Rattlesnake and the Copperhead.
Awareness is the best defense, as well as not stepping or reaching into a place you cannot see. If you are hiking in the park, it is advised to stay on the trail.
Most of the time, these scary creatures want to avoid us just like we wish to avoid them.
However, as life goes, bites do happen.
