Fayetteville, WV (WOAY)-A generous gift to West Virginia University’s College of Law is honoring a life dedicated to service, while paving the way for future generations of West Virginia lawyers.
Alice Hatcher established the Honorable John W. Hatcher Jr. Memorial Law Scholarship to celebrate her late husband’s career and commitment to justice.
A Fayette County native and WVU graduate, Judge Hatcher served his community in many ways, from the U.S. Army’s Judge Advocate General Corps to the state House of Delegates, and later as a Circuit Court Judge in Fayette County.
The scholarship will benefit West Virginia residents, with preference given to students from Fayette County.
University leaders say the gift not only honors his legacy but also strengthens the mission of the WVU College of Law, preparing students to serve with purpose and uphold the values that Judge Hatcher lived by.
He was 81 years old when he passed away in July 2025.
Alice Hatcher made the gift through the WVU Foundation.
The foundation is the nonprofit organization that receives and administers private donations on behalf of the University.
Donors can contribute to gifts to the Honorable John W. Hatcher Jr. Memorial Law Scholarship, fund 3Z1184, online at give.wvu.edu.
Donations can also be mailed to WVU Foundation, PO Box 1650, One Waterfront Place, 7th Floor, Morgantown, WV 26507, with the memo line indicating fund 3Z1184.
