It is another nice afternoon around the region, with plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures. Highs will wind up around 10 degrees above the normal by the end of today.

Tonight will be mild as well with lows in the upper 50s to around 60 degrees, also about 10 degrees above the normal. The skies will be mostly clear, so viewing of the Harvest Moon, or Supermoon, should be good.

Tomorrow, the high-pressure center that has dominated our weather for the past week will finally move off to our east, allowing a front to come into the region from the northwest. Showers will begin during the late morning and early afternoon hours.

Ahead of the front, there is plenty of moisture for the front to work with, and some of the showers that do develop with the front will contain heavy rain. More than 1″ of rain is likely over a widespread area.

With this amount of rain falling in a short amount of time, normally, flooding would be a serious concern. If there is any good news with the recent drought conditions, it’s that the chances for flooding are much smaller than they would be if we had seen the regular amount of rain. Combine that with dry soils and the leaf cover on the trees, and there could be good news all around. Still, we’ll be tracking the chances for flooding over the next couple of days.
The chances for rain will last into Wednesday before ending in the early afternoon.

Then the other big story associated with this front is the MUCH cooler air behind it. At this day and hour (6 p.m. on Monday), there is a more than 20-degree spread between cities ahead of and behind the front.

That will be the type of air that invades our region as we go into the middle of the week. Highs will only be in the mid-60s through the rest of the extended forecast. Lows will drop into the upper 30s on Friday morning, with lower 40s bookending that day. Patchy frost is possible in some areas that are more prone to frost during this cool stretch of weather. For now, it looks like temperatures will warm up beyond the seven-day forecast.
