Lewisburg, WV (WOAY) – The Greenbrier Humane Society is treating puppies for a viral illness.
According to their Facebook page, a few puppies at the humane society are being treated for parvovirus, which can lead to death if untreated.
According to the American Kennel Club, parvovirus spreads through direct contact with an infected dog or by indirect contact with a contaminated object. Puppies can be exposed to the parvo by sniffing, licking, or consuming infected feces.
In response to this situation, Greenbrier Humane Society workers have spent hours deep cleaning their facility and all areas that may have been exposed. They say they are taking every precaution to protect the health of all the animals.
They are asking the public to help in the form of donations. Donations will go directly toward covering the medical expenses needed to treat puppies impacted by the virus. You can donate in person at 151 Holliday Lane Lewisburg, WV 24901, mail-in donations at P.O. Box 926 Lewisburg, WV 24901, or over-the-phone donations at 304-645-4775. They are also in need of additional supplies to make the puppies as comfortable as possible during their recovery. Donations such as towels, blankets, treats and more are extremely helpful during these times.
As a result of being vaccinated older dogs remain healthy and unaffected by the virus. The humane society still has a few of puppies who have not contracted parvo and are available for foster-to-adopt. Their pictures are still posted on the Greenbrier Humane Society’s Facebook page.
