White Sulphur Springs, WV (WOAY)- Monongahela forest crews and local firefighters are still working to extinguish a large wildfire near white sulphur springs in Greenbrier County.
The U.S. Forest Service reported that the Whitman fire is roughly six miles north of white sulphur springs near Brushy Mountain.
The fire encompassed about 280 acres of the Monongahela National Forest yesterday.
As of today, the fire has burned approximately 412 acres and is 36 percent contained.
The forest service reports crews are on scene with local volunteer fire departments to build containment lines and manage hot spots.
Crews additionally reported that the light rain that fell across the area last night helped with containment efforts.
The forest service says there may still be visible smoke lingering in the area, especially during the evening hours.
Travelers are advised to use caution while traveling through the area.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
