Lewisburg, WV (WOAY) For nearly 15 years, the Greenbrier Humane Society has helped thousands of pets and families through its spay and neuter voucher program.
The program has invested nearly $1.5 million in local veterinary clinics to prevent unwanted litters and reduce shelter overcrowding.
However, that program is facing a major funding challenge.
Organizers say grant support was cut in half earlier this year, forcing them to limit vouchers in recent months.
Beginning in January, the Humane Society will temporarily pause issuing new vouchers through March to ensure remaining funds last through the end of the grant year in May of 2026.
Officials stress this pause will help preserve resources, support families later in the year, and honor their funding commitments.
Any vouchers already issued through December will still be honored by participating clinics. New requests are expected to reopen in April.
During the pause, pet owners are encouraged to speak with their veterinarian about discounted clinics or payment options.
Meanwhile, the Humane Society says it is actively working to secure new funding to meet growing community demand.
