‘Great American Smokeout’ urges Southern West Virginians to kick habit

RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – More than 4,300 West Virginians die from a smoking-related disease.

So on the Great American Smokeout, the American Cancer Society urged governor-elect Patrick Morrissey and state lawmakers to increase tobacco control funding and taxes on tobacco products.

Those policies can reduce tobacco use and addiction, along with taking steps toward a smoke-free life. According to the ACS, quitting smoking isn’t easy. It takes time and a plan. But you’ll be glad you did.

“We encourage everyone to think about what you’re putting into your body,” said ARH Regional Community Development Manager Kelly Elkins. “Smoking leads to health complications from high blood pressure (to) increasing your risk of a stroke. “We want everyone to put those cigarettes down and start making healthier habits to improve your health and quality of life.”
