CHARLESTON, WV (WOAY)- Governor Patrick Morrisey held a press conference this morning, providing an update on the state’s response to catastrophic flooding across southern West Virginia.
He acknowledged the widespread devastation, emphasizing the state’s commitment to recovery efforts. Volunteers, first responders, and local emergency teams have been working tirelessly to aid those affected.
There have been over 60 high-water rescue operations, and power restoration efforts continue, with over 55,000 homes reconnected.
Governor Morrisey asked citizens to remain vigilant and safe as more incoming winter weather could further impact recovery.
“I saw so much volunteer effort and food and water and people that cared so much. That’s the West Virginia way,” said Governor Morrisey. “And so it’s appropriate to thank those folks on the ground, the local emergency management teams, the first responders, the citizens of those areas. That’s the lifeblood of West Virginia.”
Yesterday, Governor Morrisey formally requested a major disaster declaration for the state. He says quote “This will help unlock federal resources to support West Virginians hardest hit by the major flooding.”
Senator Justice joined Senator Shelley Moore Capito and Representatives Carol Miller and Riley Moore in sending a letter to President Trump and the acting regional administrator for FEMA in support of Morrisey’s request.
