Charleston, WV (WOAY) Governor Patrick Morrisey announced the results of independent audits of three major state agencies, revealing what the administration says could amount to more than $168 million in annual savings.
According to the Governor’s office, internal reviews and independent audits of the Departments of Transportation, Homeland Security, and Human Services identified opportunities to reduce costs through improved oversight, operational reforms, and modernization efforts.
The administration also identified what it calls a structural deficit in the state’s Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.
Officials say temporary COVID-era spending levels have continued after federal pandemic funding expired, creating a projected $43 million fiscal gap if no changes are made.
Governor Morrisey says the audits are about reducing waste, improving efficiency, and ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly.
The Governor says some recommendations will be implemented immediately, while others will require additional review and collaboration with lawmakers.
