Governor Morrisey announced that the state has already expedited 5 million to help those who may lose SNAP benefits

Kanawha County, WV (WOAY) – Earlier this week, Governor Patrick Morrisey announced that the state would match donations to food banks up to 13 million. Morrisey told us Thursday morning that the state has already expedited 5 million.

The funds come as SNAP benefits are set to expire on November 1 amid the ongoing government shutdown. Governor Morrisey told us that a match program allows the state to stretch the funds as far as possible. The Governor has also activated the National Guard to help distribute the funds as necessary.

Morrisey told us that his administration looked into covering SNAP benefits with state funds, but said that West Virginia’s banking vendor said it would not be feasible.

Morrisey says senate democrats are at fault for the shutdown.

In the meantime, he said supporting food banks is the fastest way for the state to get help to the people who need it. If you wish to donate, you can do so by scanning the QR code on the screen now.
