Nicholas County, WV (WOAY)- Governor Patrick Morrisey has provided a heartbreaking update in the search for a missing miner at Nicholas County’s Rolling Thunder Mine.
Just after 6:00 a.m. , rescue crews were finally able to enter the mine after water levels dropped to a safe level.
Crews searched each section underground.
At 7:37 a.m., a two-man team discovered the body of the missing miner, identified as foreman Steve Lipscomb.
Teams had been working around the clock in 12-hour shifts with workers underground, on the surface coordinating supplies, and others installing a new waterline to aid in the effort.
Governor Morrisey says he and First Lady Denise Morrisey are heartbroken by the loss, offering prayers for Lipscomb’s family, friends, and fellow miners.
He praised the rescue teams for their courage, professionalism, and determination, saying their commitment “reflects the very best of West Virginia.”
Morrisey added, “Mining is more than an industry here, it’s a brotherhood, a way of life, and a source of pride. When tragedy strikes, we grieve together, we stand together, and we support one another as one West Virginia family.”
